How 3PL pricing really works

A plain-English breakdown of receiving, storage, pick-pack, and shipping costs so you can compare quotes fairly.

3PL quotes are notoriously hard to compare because no two providers itemize them the same way. Once you understand the handful of components that make up almost every fulfillment quote, you can line up any two offers and see which is actually cheaper for your business. Here is the plain-English breakdown.

Receiving

What it costs to inbound your inventory: unloading, counting, and shelving your product when it arrives. It is usually billed by time, by carton, or by unit. Ask how it is calculated so a large restock does not surprise you.

Storage

Rent for the space your inventory occupies, typically billed per bin, shelf, pallet, or cubic foot per month. Slow-moving inventory costs you here, which is why accurate demand planning pays off.

Pick and pack

The core per-order cost: pulling the items, packing them, and preparing the shipment. Most providers charge a base fee for the first item and a smaller fee for each additional item. Your average order profile, how many items a typical order contains, drives this number.

Packaging

Boxes, mailers, tape, and any branded materials or inserts. Some providers bundle standard packaging, others bill it separately. Custom packaging costs more but does brand work, which we cover in our post on unboxing as a growth channel.

Shipping

Usually the largest line. It is the carrier’s charge, driven by weight, dimensional weight, zone, and surcharges, sometimes with a markup. This is where your warehouse location and zones matter most, and where 2026 carrier rate increases of roughly 6 percent make efficiency count.

Value-added services and minimums

Kitting, assembly, returns processing, and special projects are typically billed separately. Also check for monthly minimums or account fees that apply even in a slow month.

How to compare quotes fairly

Do not compare list prices. Take your real order profile, your actual weights, item counts, and destination mix, and ask each provider to price that. The cheapest per-order rate can lose to a provider with lower shipping zones once you run your true volume. Use our instant estimator for shipping, then request a full quote for the rest.
