Choosing a 3PL
10 questions to ask before signing with a 3PL
The contract, accuracy, cutoff, and pricing questions that separate good fulfillment partners from expensive mistakes.
Choosing a third-party logistics partner is one of the highest-stakes decisions a growing brand makes. The right 3PL disappears into the background and lets you grow. The wrong one shows up as angry customer emails, surprise invoices, and inventory you cannot trust. Before you sign anything, ask these ten questions.
1. How is your pricing structured, line by line?
Ask for every fee: receiving, storage, pick and pack, packaging, shipping, and any surcharges. If a provider cannot explain a line, that line will surprise you later. Our plain-English guide to 3PL pricing shows what to expect.
2. What is your pick accuracy, and how do you measure it?
Accuracy drives your reviews, your refunds, and your marketplace standing. Ask for a real number and how it is verified. Scan-verified picking, where every item is barcode-checked before the box is sealed, is the standard you want.
3. What is your order cutoff, and when do orders ship?
An order placed today should not sit for three days. Ask for the daily cutoff time and the dispatch commitment. Same or next business day is a reasonable expectation.
4. Do you integrate with my store and sales channels?
Orders should flow automatically from Shopify and your other channels, with tracking written back to the customer. Confirm your exact platforms are supported. See the platforms we connect to.
5. Can I see my inventory in real time?
You should be able to log in and see accurate counts any time, not wait for a nightly report. Real-time inventory is what keeps you from overselling.
6. Who is my point of contact when something goes wrong?
Ask who you actually talk to and how escalation works. A team that knows your account beats an anonymous ticket queue every time.
7. How do you handle returns?
Returns are inevitable. Ask how fast items are inspected and restocked, because product sitting in a returns pile is revenue you cannot resell.
8. Where are you located, and what zones does that put my orders in?
Location decides your shipping cost and speed. A central location ships to more of the country at lower zones, as we cover in our post on shipping zones and margins.
9. What are your contract terms and minimums?
Look for month-to-month terms and no punitive minimums, so a slow month does not cost you.
10. How do you handle a spike, like a launch or peak season?
Ask how they scale for a viral moment or Q4. You want a partner who flexes up without dropping accuracy.
